Released in January 1977 amid the social and political turbulence of 1970s Britain, Pink Floyd' Animals offered a powerful and uncompromising critique of inequality, exploitation, greed and the abuse of power.
Loosely inspired by George Orwell’s Animal Farm, but ultimately pursuing a very different argument, Roger Waters divided society into three animal types: the Pigs, representing greed, privilege and the pursuit of power; the Dogs, ruthless and amoral social climbers prepared to do whatever is necessary to reach the top; and the Sheep, the passive and largely unquestioning majority who conform to the established order.
Animals is a concept album strongly shaped by Roger Waters’s philosophy and ideas, but given its distinctive Pink Floyd sound through the music contributions of David Gilmour, Richard Wright and Nick Mason.
