About the event

Humanism’s emphasis on autonomy, rationality, secularism, and progress, has profoundly shaped our contemporary views and social structures. However, these values have also led to problematic consequences related to universalism, anthropocentrism, and an overly optimistic belief in human progress.

In this talk organised in collaboration with Humanists Malta, Dr Niki Young will critically examine the ongoing relevance of humanism by engaging with diverse thinkers who challenge and destabilise the traditional concept of the human in relation to its perceived "others." The  ultimate goal of Dr Young shall be to defend a more inclusive ethical and political framework that considers the stakes and limitations of humanism, offering an alternative approach to understanding the world and our place within it.

Dr Niki Young is a lecturer of Philosophy at the University of Malta. His philosophical interests centre around 20th and 21st Century Continental thought, with a special focus on the incorporation of 20th century ideas into contemporary fields of research such as those of Posthumanism, Animal Studies, as well as New and Speculative forms of Realism and Materialism
